Building Resiliency for Transition-age Youth and Young Adults with Down Syndrome (during times of transition, loss, and grief) is available to MDSC and DSAIA members at a discounted rate through the DSAIA Affiliate Webinar Partnership Program.
In this webinar, we will discuss experiences and feelings of loss, grief, and worry that may arise during times of transition (e.g., turning 22, coping with illness or death of a loved one, and coping with changes in family dynamics). Vignettes describing coping strategies for the individual, as well as strategies for parents and professionals will be shared.
Your presenter: Melissa Levin is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. Melissa’s interests revolve around mental health and self-advocacy for transition-age youth with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD). She is a Transition Specialist for Newton Public Schools where she provides counseling and groups to transition-age students, and assists families in accessing resources. She is also a consultant to Boston University’s Youth and Young Adult Empowerment, Leadership, and Learning Lab, where she assists in developing self-advocacy curriculum. She previously provided outpatient counseling to individuals with I/DD. Melissa has worked with many families whose children – elementary-aged through middle-aged – have Down Syndrome. She has been a part of the disabilities field since joining Best Buddies in high school and has had many roles since then: residential staff, PCA, mentor, and her favorite of all: social worker and friend. In 2013, Melissa completed a LEND fellowship with Boston Children’s Hospital. Melissa has a two-year old daughter.
Presented by Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress in partnership with Down Syndrome Affiliates in Action.
